Switch off the wall switch as well.
If you replace with a blank plate wire nut the black from supply to this black and again cap the red.
Connect the blue wire to the red wire.
This setup allows you to dim the light in the fixture and also switch the fan off and on from a separate switch.
If it s more than just a dimmer you might keep it in a box for if you can use it later.
To do this method the wire from your wall circuit to your light has to have 3 wires.
Follow the manufacturer s instructions to hook up your dimmer fan switch at the switch box.
Turn off the power for the room with the ceiling fan at the breaker box.
Connect black fan wire to the black ceiling wire.
Having a ceiling fan that is already wired up to a standard dimmer switch is definitely not ideal because as we mentioned earlier it heightens the risk of fires and damage to your fan.
If you replace with a plain switch switch the black wire up to the fan and cap off the red wire on both ends.
Your power supply line the black wire should be feeding both switches and those switches power the fan black or the light blue.
If you don t want to pay out for another fan or worse have to repair your home after a damaging fire you re going to want to remove the standard dimmer switch as soon as possible.
Fan speed would need to be controlled by a pull chain.
Eric the concern here is that you will need a speed control switch that will be rated for both ceiling fan motors.
